What is correct?

Is the following sentence correct: My father has got a red car.

This use of 'gotten' is a feature of American English. It means 'He has recently purchased/obtained a red car'.

If you mean he possesses a red car then you don't need "got"; you can just say "My father has a red car". Nevertheless, in British English it's extremely common in conversation for people to use "got" to indicate possession (even though it's unnecessary). In this case a contraction would very often be used: "My father's got a red car". I would try avoid the use of "got" in this sense in more form
