Hmm. I thought that might be the case, but I didn't add it to the list because here the porter is the person at the door who helps you get your suitcases out of the taxi and into the hotel (or airport). He would not go into the rooms of the hotel like a bellhop would.

Hi Jim,
We both know that I'm not an expert on either British English or American English vocabulary. However, this particular word is one that I know very well because in my younger days I worked for three months as a porter at a small hotel in a small English town. The British manager of the hotel called me a porter, and I think he knew his native language.
