What is a Muriel?

In Friends, people think it is funny when they find out that Chaddler's middle name is Muriel. But I can not even find it in a dictionary. I looked it up using google image, it came up with a lot of female pictures. I am wondering, the funniness is just because Muriel is a name for female? Thanks.

But I still do not get it. utter perfection means being totally perfect?
Anyway, FYI, in Friends, Chandler is known as a joke-maker and has a gay father and super **** mother. So how does Muriel become a funny middle name for him?

Never having seen the show, I don't really have a sense of the character, and can't imagine why it would be any funnier in his case than it would be for any guy whose friends found out he had a girl's name. So he's not just a girl but a totally perfect girl.
This usage has to be new, so it wouldn't have been known to his parents when they named him.

Edit. My youngest son watches, and says he thought it was funny because it was a funny girl's name. He wasn't aware of the Muriel meaning and didn't think anyone else was, so he doubted the writers would make use of it.

It's funny because it's a girl's name, and a rather old-fashioned one as well.
