What is a concept?

I'm writing my bachelor thesis on a theme "concepts of friendship in Shakespeare's plays". My supervisor persists on devoting a whole chapter on the meaning of concepts. So can any of you help in terms of sources, where I could check and read what actually a concept is. It has to be either academic or some kind of a book. Thanks.

In very basic terms, a concept is an idea. In his plays, what ideas does Shakespeare have about friendship? Usually, this leads into a discussion of how he presents these ideas to his audience via, for example, plot, character, tone.
