what international exam shall I take in order to teach worldwide??

Question

I'm a Brazilian citizen living in London. I'm planning to go back to Brazil next july and would love to know which exam is the most succesful and known worlwide. Im taking the CPE in december but want a teacher qualification. Does anyone know ??

Hello, I don't know if someone has asked this before, if yes, then I am sorry for double posting. Do I need to have units in education to teach English internationally? Or is a TOEFL / IELTS certificate enough? Thanks.

As far as I know any of the international exams allows you to teach abroad. I believe the more you get the more your salary will be.Ive spent 2 years in Brazil teaching English and the only exam i had that time was the CAE. Now, in order to be more qualified and expand my knowledge Ill be taking the CPE and the CELTA exam.

Hello, my name is Laura, I'm from Austria and NO english teacher. So I don't answer your question but I "don't hesitate" to ask you, because I have a question. I found your posting by searching for people/teachers(using the word "brazil") who might have experience in teaching brazilian youth in less developed areas - because I have to organize (small) english lessons for absolute beginners, i.m. for pupils (children or adults) who are badly educated even in their mother tongue (I will be sent in the northeastern district). So my question is: Where could I get support either by practical hints how to do that or by teaching material especially for that purpose? Maybe you have an idea because of your background or you know of a similar project?

Hello Laura,

It seems to me that you need some materials for literacy in English. You didn't say if your Brazilian students are living in Austria and also trying to learn German. If they are this may cause them some considerable effort to learn two languages at once. However, there are some literacy websites for English learners that may help you.

Teachernet - this site gives you some different options on teaching literacy and explains what each approach.

This man has a literacy website and he's also put together a list of books for teaching literacy

In addition to these sites, I'd recommend using as many books with pictures as possible. You don't say if you have access to computers for this class but a good Internet picture dictionary is here and one in English and Portuguese is here

Longman publishes a print picture dictionary

Oxford publishes one - this is the one I've used with the type of students you will have and I quite like it.

Cambridge's Picture Dictionary is here.

Any of those publishers will have an online catalogue which you can search through for good books to teach young children, which is where you will need to start if you are teaching students who have literacy problems even in their native language. And of course, Hueber is worth a look because they'll have materials in both German and English for beginners; if your students are living in Austria this might be more helpful.

To your information: The courses will take place in Brazil for the children there, so I will be sent to Sume for six month, where I have to organize some little courses of very low level, and my impression is, that I can't work with standard teaching materials but have to improvise. If you visit here again maybe you could tell me whether you will be teaching English or German in Brazil? If I have a better idea of what type of classes you will have and what language you will actually be teaching them, and for what purpose they are learning the language, I could be more specifically helpful with suggestions.

I will be sent by a very small (german) project to a village in Brazil in order to organize English lessons for the (poor) brazilian children there (maybe also for adults who want to learn), that means pupils who are not used to learn a foreign language.
