What if

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to understand 'what if' sentences.

As an example: What if the Americans were to see the Russians as their enemy?

What I want to convey is: They haven't yet, but it might happen. It's a possibility. Does the above convey that, or is there a better way of phrasing it?

Thank you.

anonymous Does the above convey that Yes. You are imagining something, and asking what the consequences would be if it happened. However, the slight problem with your sentence is that many Americans have seen the Russians as their enemy for much of the past 70 years.
