What if

Is there a meaning difference and native speakers really distinguish in speaking?

What if you are wrong? VS. What if you were wrong?

Some people say difference between 'what if' + S + present verb and 'what if' + S + past verb is whether speakers think of possibilty in it or not.

Is this right?
