I think it's fine.

Some people may write I'm wondering: "What did I come here for?" To me, this is incorrect because you are not talking or thinking aloud.

You can ask, "Why did I come here for?" With a high probabilty you are looking for an answer. I came here because... But if you add "I am wondering" at the beginning of the sentence, this sentence turns into a noun clause. In fact, rather than asking a question, you declare something to us. However you can say:

"I am wondering what I came here for. **** i
