what I am / who I am

"I owe who/ what I am to my father."

Is there any difference between 'who I am' and 'what I am'?

If there is not any, which one sounds natural between who and what in the above sentence?

I'm not sure how legitimate the use of 'who' is in this example; I would certainly use 'what', it sounds a lot more natural to my English ear.
