What happens?

Does function 'what' differently between 'what happens?' and 'keep your mind off what's coming'. I think they do different things but I am not sure. Could you help me out. Thank you in advance.

I don't see any difference in the function of 'what' in 'What happens?' and 'What is coming?'. They are both interrogative pronouns and the subject of the sentence. What difference do you think you perceive?

Thank you but is it possible to see 'is coming' just modifies 'What' because I have learned that 'what' means 'the thing that' and the interpretation is better if we see 'is coming' modifies 'what' in the sentence. What do you think? Thank you.

I think I don't know what you are talking about. If 'is coming' modifies 'what' (in your grammar system), then 'happen's also modifies 'what'.

How about 'That's what counts'? In other words, that's the thing that counts and the thing that is 'what' there.

The 'thing' is 'what counts', not just 'what'. 'What is the subject pronoun of 'counts', though it is now not a question.
