What happened was that my dad loved the pizza.

Hi. This is my first post. I'm in the late stages of writing a dissertation relating to English syntax. While I'm quite confident in my command of this language, I'm ultimately still a non-native speaker, so tend not to completely trust my own grammatical intuitions regarding subtle grammatical minutiae. But the few native-speaker friends I have are quite busy and, by now, rather weary of my innumerable inquiries. Hence I now turn to the Internets for help.

</introduction>

My question concerns a certain type of sentence, and whether English conceptualizes it as a State or as an Event. Jackendoff (1976: 100) offers a simple grammatical test for this dichotomy: if a clause can felicitously be prefixed by What happened was that ... then it describes an Event. If such a prefixation yields an infelicitous sentence, the clause is stative.

I thus now humbly request native-speaker judgments on the following two constructed sentences:

(1) What happened was that my dad loved pizza.

(2) What happened was that my dad loved the pizza.

Thanks in advance.
