What happened first?

I just read this in a book and i dont really understand it . My englsh isnt soo good.

"About 4 years ago, a year after my operation, I started looking for a new sporting activity and came across a free self defence class. Soon afterwards, and as a direct consequence I started taking kickboxing classes".

What happens first - the kickboxing classes or the self defence class?
