What grammar should be used with "All this time"?

Hello.
Let's assume that I've done some work that took approximately 2 months. If I were asked: "What did you do all this time?", could I say: "I had been doing some work on the project". Could I use Present Perfect Continuous? I heard that in some cases we could use PP or PPC without adding mention of events happened after what we say in PP. Or how else to emphasize that my work took two months?
Thanks.

You were asked about a specific time period in the past so past simple is the tense to use. If they asked what have you done for the last 2 months then you could say I have been doing work or I've been working on. Note that had in your example makes it past perfect.
