What goes with animals? 'Which' or 'who'?

Dear Everyone,

I've seen both (i.e. the name of an animal species or just the word 'animals' both as 'animals which...' and 'animals who...'), and now I don't know which should be used... Could you, please, enlighten me on this matter?

E.g. would you say 'a cat which has attached itself to its owner' ,

or

'a cat who has attached himself to his owner' ?

Thanks in advance.

Emotion: cat

you can't use THAT everytime, e.g. for non-defining relative clauses you have to choose which or who
Example:
Neighbor's cat Mitsie, who/which scratches the door loudly every night, is 12 years old.
