What form of word it is?

"Thus, imitation of adult speech cannot completely account for the way children produce language."

I cut off this sentence from an english book I'm reading.

My question is what form of word 'produce' is? noun or verb?

I've found 'produce' shouldn't be verb because of 'account for' but It seems like 'produce' is used as a verb.

If yes, how?

If not, how?
