What exactly it is that postmodernism is
POSTmodernISM
This ISM (to begin at the end) does double duty. It announces that the referent here is not merely a chronological division but an organized system– a poetics, in fact – while at the same time properly identifying what exactly it is that postmodernism is post. Postmodernism is not post modern, whatever that might mean, but post modernism; it does not come after the present (a solecism), but after the modernist movement.
