'what ever' = 'what on earth'

What ever happened to Daryl?

What ever did she say?

I'm told that the trick here (to determine whether one or two words are used) is to replace the word 'ever' with 'on earth'. If you can do that, use two words ('what ever').

What ever happened to Daryl?
ie What on earth happened to Daryl?

What ever did she say?
ie What on earth did she say?

That said, are the two-word forms ('what ever') correct here or absolutely wrong?

Hmm, OK, if that rule is correct then I have been using the word "whatever" incorrectly all my life!
