Nowadays, people are being physically set apart from each other by technology. In fact, most people admit that they feel more comfortable when they chat or communicate with their acquaintances through social media than in person. This could be a result of a modern lifestyle; however, it leaves both negative and positive effects on society, especially, on family relationships.
Industrialization era leaves a gigantic impact on human life. We are kept in a hastening living pace with no way out; therefore, we have no choice to keep in touch with others but using social media which is really convenient and effective. When people don’t have time to hang out with their friends at café or visiting their relatives, a much better choice is available – online conversations. Our social life are significantly improved.
At first hand, social media has made a huge contribution in tighten up the relationship between away from home folks. Oversea students or workers have a chance to stay up to date with their family status through facebook or other social apps which can be a cure for homesickness. Actually, they can communicate with their family in the best conditions even when they are miles apart. For example, video chat shows facials expressions and pictures convey instant emotions. This is an advantage of social media.
In the other hand, we can’t deny the fact that social media also kills family relationship. For example, some families have to suffer misunderstanding between each other since they don’t communicate much. Teenagers usually share their feeling with friends on the internet; hence, the demands of sharing is satisfied that equals parents’ conversations or advice are unnecessary. This build a wall among family members, eventually, family connection fell apart. Additionally, We tend to spend more time on the internet with friends and relatives rather than have real quality time with them. That means, we all come to an agreement that online conversation or comments and likes are enough to maintain a relationship; yet, it doesn’t. Non-physical communication makes us forget how to read other expressions and emotions, which is really toxic. People need to see each other to understand their companion better, none of socializing way is better than face to face conversation.
In short, I believe social media has been an evolution in communicating, yet is a two-sided tool. Thus, modern society should be aware of its shortcoming and use it smartly to avoid the negative effects.
