Context:

I doubt if your average clod makes much of a disitinction. So it's not necessary or important that TG be included with gays, or excluded. Either way, their fortunes are tied

In my experience a clod is a rube --- an unsophisticated farm boy. In your example, the implication is that he's uneducated and doesn't "know his way around." He's inexperienced in the ways of the world --- especially the ways of the big city.
