What does "way down the future" mean?

When someone says "This technology will pick up, not in the near future, but way down the future and it will be way ahead of the game".

What do they mean by way down the future, in terms of number of years. Is it 2-3 years down the line or 10-15 years?

This is an informal expression. " Near future would be within, say, a couple of years. Further off, I would put it more like ten to fifteen years.

This is an informal expression. The standard way to say this would be "in the distant future" or, perhaps, "in the far future." Near future would be within, say, a couple of years. Further off, I would put it more like ten to fifteen years. (Or, if it is very unlikely, then a century.)
