What does "warm-up" mean?

Hi teachers,

1. I found the following instruction in a picture online. It was directed to the teachers, I guess. I'd like to know what warm-up means. Knowing that I looked it up, but I found several meanings.

"Allow me time to warm-up. Using timers and switching activities is helpful."

2. Does may usage of the word "Knowing" above correct? I mean using it after a full stop?

Thanks in advance,
