I have been reading a book of Tony Hillerman's, and found this word "chittering" that I cannot find an explanation in my dictionaries. It is under the following context:" There was a cittering outburst of warning calls, and in a second the (prairie) dogs were in their holes."
Can anyone answer this question please?
Thank you very much!

Well, not actually. Birds twitter; women chatter; prairie dogs chitter-- it is imitative of the small sounds the rodents make. The verbs can sometimes overlap in use, but the overlap is usually metaphoric.
