What does this single sentence mean?

The kids learned the hard way that there was an easier solution.

I don't understand what it means.

Which words do you not understand, moon? It seem straightforward to me. This is the only fixed phrase I see: If you learn something 'the hard way', you learn from unpleasant experiences rather than by being taught If she won't listen, she'll have to learn/find out the hard way.

I got confused when I read this part: "... the hard way that there was...."(#1)
I can't interpret that part. "That" which looks like a relative clause confuses me.

In simple example of a relative clause, it is interpreted like this.
She is Mary that I like. (She is Mary. I like Mary)

But with that rule in mind, I can't interpret #1 because if I do that, #1 becomes
