What does this sentence mean?

Even the Cock-lane ghost had been laid only a round dozen
of years, after rapping out its messages, as the spirits of this very year last past (supernaturally deficient in originality) rapped out theirs.

Well, I don't understand this sentence at all. I suppose "laid" means "burried" here; however, I don't know what "this very year last past" means and the whole sentence is difficult to understand honestly.

Hi,

It just means 'previous'.

Your passage is written in a literary, old-fashioned style.

Today. you could say

2009 is this very year last

or

2009 is this very year past

Saying both together just adds emphasis.
