What does this sentence mean?

Because the most Greeks were farmers, fertility cults, whose members worshiped and sought to enhance the productive forces in nature ( usually conceived as female), were popular though often hidden from modern view because of our dependence on literary texts expressing the values of an educated, urban elite.

Does the sentence emphasize popular or hidden from modern view? I think the former because the last clause "because of..." supports "popular", isn't it?

It emphasizes neither; it merely presents both facts. Grammatical dependence does not necessarily mean semantic dependence.
