What does this mean? (Paragraph about chimpanzees)

Thae who visit zoos are always amused by how chimpanzees look. No other animal brings more laughter than they. The fact may be that they make us laugh, which is a nervous reaction caused by the marked resemblance between us and chimpanzees. [It is said that chimpanzees hold up a mirror to us, but it seems that we find it hard to remain serious when we are confronted with the image we see reflected]

I'd like to know whether my interpretation of [. ] part is correct. Could anyone help me with this? This paragraph deals with similarities between humans and chinpanzees rather than differences. I understand this passage as a whole, but I am not sure about [. ] part.

[It is said that chimpanzees hold up a mirror to us, but it seems that we find it hard to remain serious when we are confronted with the image we see reflected]

In my understanding, "hold up a mirror to us" is used as a metaphor to say that chimpanzees mirror humans, and "the image" in this connection implies how chimpanzees look. Am I right or am I going in a completely wrong direction?

teacherJapan [It is said that chimpanzees hold up a mirror to us, but it seems that we find it hard to remain serious when we are confronted with the image we see reflected] When we look at chimps, it is like looking at ourselves. We see our expressiveness, our behaviors, our moral sense, and our social interactions. Are you amused by this?

Haha!! That's so adorable!! We laugh maybe because we see ourselves in their behavior:-) Treated inequally, one of the monkeys got upset and threw cucumbers at her as if to say, "I want grapes, not these!!" Thank you very much for the video! Seeing is believing:)
