What does this mean?

I'm reading a book related to self-help. In the section of "forgiveness", there's a sentence like this: "If someone and I both hurt each other, I feel justified for a while, then clean my side of the street." What exactly does "clean my side of the street" mean?

Thanks a lot!

I think, because the theme is forgiveness, it means that she does what she can on her part to 'cleanse' the matter. This would indicate forgiving both the other person and herself through that rather mysterious process which is a combination of resolve and the self control needed to accomplish that which has been resolved. What the other person does on the other side of the street is his or her responsibility.

  • It is a figure of speech.
  • The street is a metaphor for the flow of social interaction.
