What does this mean??

Mentioned in a Marriage License!!

"You are hereby authorized to join in marrige ( so and so ) and ( so and so )

And of this license you will make due return to my office."

What does this mean in simple English. Could anyone please explain to me?

( I am asking of the meaning of the sentence in red )

Thanks in advance

Not easy, Vigor. I think it means that the married couple must pay ('make due return to for services rendered or property delivered'-- Webster's ) the minister for the marriage service.

Could it be an instruction to the minister?

He is authorized to marry (so and so) and (so and so); after which, he has to send it back to whatever authority issued the licence.

Only a guess. Not my area of expertise.

I would think of an instruction to the minister to send the license back to the relevant authority.
