what does these mean..

1. looked in control
ex)the American always looked in control.
2. stretch back
ex) Floyd Mayweather, unbeaten in 48 professional fight stretching back to 1996.
3.Mayweather started much the better of the two fighters.
(especially, i have no idea about this part "much the better of")
4.Mayweather's speed and movement proved key, and as the fight wore on he began to have more success.(plz explain "proved key and as the fight wore on")
