What does the word "Survey" mean ?

Hi everybody, i attend university classes specializing in english language, in a country where English is the third language. The professor added a new course ( subject) called "Survey". untill now we had just one session. The professor said that we will study in this course about Middle ages particularly about Geoffrey Chaucer and some excerpts from his work "Canterbury Tales" .
The problem is that i didn't understand what does the word "Survey" have to do with the middle ages or Chaucer. I know that the word "Survey" means to collect information about a topic or issue from individuals.
So, could you please explain to me what is the relationship between the word "survey" and what we study ?
Thank you in advance.

I presume that the class will just start with Chaucer and then move on to Mallory, Shakespeare, Dryden, Pope, Blake, Shelley, etc. It will be a survey (= a brief look throughout) the history of English literature.

In the context of American universities and colleges a "survey" course is the first (and sometimes only) course students take on a given subject. It is intended as a kind of overview to give a general understanding of the subject but, by design, do
