What does the “waste” mean here

he was travelling up the Yangtze for the first time ,but he took no interest in his surroundings .He had no eye for the waste of turbulent waters that was spread before him, nor for the colours ,tragic or tender , which sunrise or sunset lent the sense .would you like to explain me the meaning of "waste" ? thanks in advance .
