What does the "up" mean, here.

In Wikipedia , there is such a sentence: It(the international space station) was put together in Low Earth orbit up until 2011.

What does the "up" mean, here. Thanks

"up until" essentially means the same as "until". The word "up" just emphasises the idea of time progressing until a cutoff point. The sentence as a whole is quite poorly written, in my opinion.
