What does the underlined words refer to?

Although Shackleton and his crew were well-prepared, their expedition was more difficult than they could have imagines. In January of 1915 their ship, the Endurance, became stuck in ice within 100 miles of Antarctica. It was "like (a)an almond in the middle of (b)a chocolate bar," according to a crew member.

What does (a) and (b) mean in the text?

Is (a) 'their ship, the Endurance'? and (b) 'ice'?

Could you pinpoint what those mean in the text?

Thank you so much.
