The way teaching is organized is also different from school. At university, lecturers teach classes that may last tow or three hours and can include 300-400 students. There are usually other smaller classes where students can discuss subjects they find difficult, and sometimes lecturers spend time with individual students, talking about work they have done.
a- lecturers b- students
This question was in a formal examination and I think it is confusing.
In my view point it refers to ( b- students ) whereas some other teachers and students chose ( a- lecturers )
Thanks in advance.
In strict terms of grammar. it refers to 'students'. But in terms of intended meaning, it seems slightly ambiguous to me.

I think that lecturers wold normally refer to their 'research' rather than their 'work', so I think the reference is to 'students'.
