What does the underlined sentence mean?

We found wonderland /You and I got lost in it /And we pretended it could last forever, eh
We found wonderland /You and I got lost in it /And life was never worse but never better, eh

Hi. I'm interested in the underlined part. I'm told it doesn't mean "life was not worse nor better". If so, what does it mean?
Thank you.

Life in wonderland was pretty much the same as life on the real earth. There were positive things and negative things, success and failure, love and hate.
