What does "the star and crescent" mean?

Does it mean "Christians and Muslims"?

Context:

It isn't just "leading figures," but citizens of all stripes (in the United States) who continually push the Christian doctrine. The hilltop cross for instance often wins a permanent home, but I've often wondered whether the star and crescent would be equally welcome
