What does "the" refer to here?

"U.S. study of pregnant women with Zika finds that 6 percent of the pregnancies resulted in birth defects."

Could you tell me what "the" refers to in this sentence? Pregnancies related to women who have Zika maybe? Would it have the same meaning without the article?
