What does the phrase "phone in" mean?

Hi there,

what does the phrase "phone in" mean?

I'm still in there, changing his diapers, picking his fleas... but he's just phoning it in. Just so hard to accept the fact that something you love so much doesn't love you back.

I assume it means "treat sb. carelessly", am I right? Anyone could go a little deeper to explain this phrase and its usage? Thanks.

That's about it: phoning it in instead of taking care of it in person.
