What does the phrase modify?

Hi~ what do you think the phrase underlined modify?

Myelin sheaths OR the things we do the most?

It seems to be "myelin sheaths" to me but I'm not sure. Would you take a look and let me know your thoughts?

Thanks~

The human brain is designed to be transformed based on how often
we engage in certain tasks. Since the brain learns only a portion of what
is presented daily, actions that are repeated are prioritized for short-term
memory. The brain protects the things we do the most with myelin sheaths
that increase the rate of recall and the likelihood that the information will
make connections with prior knowledge. Over time, repetition becomes
the low-energy-consuming foundation that allows the brain to focus its
limited resources on more advanced connections.

In terms of grammar, it refers to 'myelin sheaths'. If that is not the writer's intended meaning, he should reword it.

The author does not write very well, and they don't know much about neurology.

That is why you (and I) are having a difficult time understanding the text.
