What does the greeting "Alright" mean?

Being British myself I was bought up to say hello or hi as a greeting. In some areas of the uk people just say to me "alright". I simply don't understand this, it's like their way of saying hello because it's not like they expect for a long response as if they're asking if I'm alright. What link does hello have with alright? It's embarrassing being unable to answer what is now a common greeting.
How do you guys respond to this? I really am confused!!
Thanks!

Hello, Hayden—and welcome to English Forums. 'Alright' is just a modern casual greeting, and deserves no more specific response than does 'Hello' or 'Hi'.
