What does 'the eight-ball' mean?

In this sentence I can't not figure out what the underlined eight-ball means.

I surmise that because I don't know what 'the eight-ball' means I can't not understand this sentence. (Of course I am not definitely sure of my conjecture.)

Can you explain or show to me what it is?

As far as I know, the eight ball is a variety of the game pool or a ball used in the game of pool. But, neither of those meanings fit in the above sentence.
