The bulk of cases are of the mild dengue fever type but the thousands of recovered patients over the years are a huge reservoir for deadly sequential infections.

What does the bold part mean?

Thanks.

I believe "sequential" would be better as "subsequent."

Most people get only a mild form of the illness and recover.
But all those people who had been ill and recovered form a large population of people who might get a more serious (deadly) form of infection later.
