What does the "and" connect? / What is the antecedent?

Could you help me when you are free?

"After a long day at work, Eddie returns home to his wife and the warm love of the niece he and his wife have raised."

1. What does the "and" connect?

At first I thought it connects sentences, "Eddie returns home to his wife" and "the warm love of the niece he and his wife have raised", but on second thought I suppose it connects nouns, "his wife" and "the warm love of the niece". Am I correct?

2. What is the antecendent?

What is the antecedent of "he and his wife have raised"? I think it is "niece". Am I correct?

Incidentally, if there are some grammatical errors in my questions, could you correct them?
