What does "so much as" mean here
In a popular 1962 textbooks, referring to Charles Darwin's works On the Origins of Species and The Descent of Man, science editors confidently asserted, "When [Darwin] finished, the fact of evolution could be denied only by an abandonment of reason." And, " [Darwin's] books did not so much undermine the old, comfortable order of things as simply overwhelm it."
My question is what does "so much as" mean here? Does the last sentence mean Darwin's books did not undermine the old world or does it mean the books did undermine the old world (not by overwhelming it but by some other way)?? Thanks...
