What does "should have been" mean here?

Lying abed in her narrow bunk, she found herself wondering how it would be to have a man squeezed in beside her in place of her handmaid, and the thought was more exciting than it should have been. (Game of Thrones)

Hi. What does "should have been" mean here? Is it equivalent to "would have been" here? If it equals "would have been", then I think it is part of a third conditional, right?

Thank you.
