A shadow minister is a member of the opposition party whose keeps a close eye on a particular government minister. The shadow's minister's task is to point out, on behalf of his/her own party, the mistakes in the government minister's policy, and to prepare his/her party's alternative plans. If the government falls, and the opposition party is elected to power, the shadow minister may expect to take the government minister's job, though this does not always happen.
