What does scavenged mean here

Aw nice..that's what I thought..but when I was looking it up .. didn't see the meaning > eat

You thinking the guy is being a scavenger (not literally!) by eating on like dead materials ?

A scavenger is an animal who does not hunt specific prey. It will search out for anything in its vicinity that might provide nourishment.
In this case, the person did not have the time to learn how to hunt, he just gathered what he could find.
