What does "running into" means here? (difficult question)?

What does "running into" means here? (difficult question)?
The right, in its upper portion, was also partially, if not thoroughly, ossified, while the lower region was merely a mass of purulent tubercles, running one into another.

The most probable meaning I have found is "collide"; however, it doesn't make much sense. Therefore, is there some kind of metaphor involved here?

Well, colliding involves moving objects, so I don't think it is a good idea to use "run into" as a metaphor in this case.

Hi,

The general idee here is that they are connected to each other, tangled together.

Thank you, but in your opinion how well does "run into" convey that meaning?

Hi,

It seems clear to me.

It also carries the related idea of 'flowing into each other, merging, combining'.

We see that more clearly in a sentence like

Smith Street runs into Eastern Avenue.
