What does "restores its subject to stature" mean

The quote is from a film review about a Soviet composer which life mirrored the SU itself etc.

Peter Rosen's film portrait, "Khachaturian," restores its subject to stature that will force a re-evaluation of his place in 20th century music

Does anybody know what the part in bold mean? Bringing attention to the subject would be a guess

Thanks a real lot
