What does "would have liked"mean?

Hi all,

Can anyone tell what "would have liked" means in the following sentence?

"I would have liked a peice of cake, but the kids have polished it off"

Is it as the same meaning as "I would like"?

Your help would be much appreciated Emotion: smile
